Organization of American Historians An extensive list of history links along with basic information about the organization.

American Historical Association A very nice site. Strong emphasis on teaching history in K - 12.

 

General United States History

American Labor History This is an extensive site covering all periods of American history.

American Memory, The Library of Congress WOW! What a site. This is a great place to spend five or six hours just looking around. Find historic documents, photos, maps, and much more. Check out the photos from the 1840s.

American Social History Project This organization "aims to revitalize interest in history by challenging the traditional ways that people learn about the past."  They have also published the excellent US History textbook focusing on labor history, Who Built America?

American Studies at the University of Virginia This is an extensive American Studies site.  It includes numerous maps and primary sources.  There is a large section on the 1930s.

African American Mosaic: A Library of Congress Resource Guide for the Study of Black History and Culture. Learn what happened to Robert E. Lee's slaves after they were freed. Tour Nicodemus, a Kansas African American township established in the late nineteenth century. Discover what role blacks played in the WPA.

Afro-American Almanac This site includes folktales, biographies, short histories of events particularly related to African American history, and games.  This site is worth visiting.

California State Railroad Museum A nice site with some great pictures.

National Women's History Project "Your window on the world of women's history."

Presbyterian Historical Society "Unlocking the past for the future."

Sierra Club - This site offers a history of the organization with biographies of environmentalists.

United States Constitution - This document is posted on the US House of Representatives web site.

The West A PBS site based on their mini series.

 

Early United States History

Archiving Early America "Our main focus at Archiving Early America is primary source material from 18th Century America-- all displayed digitally. A unique array of original newspapers, maps and writings come to life on your screen just as they appeared to our forebears more than 200 years ago."  The down side of this site is its abundance of advertisements.

California Missions Studies Association This site offers articles and pictures.

Central Pacific Railroad Photographic History Museum There is a wealth of photographs at this site.

Chetro Ketl Great Kiva  Take a 3D tour of this Anasazi site.

Colonial Williamsburg  Tour this historic Virginia city.  This is a large site an well worth a visit.

Declaration of Independence This is on the James Madison University web site.

Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass  Maintained by the National Park Service, this site provides information and images of Douglass. Good links to related sites can also be found here.

Erie Canal Online Here you will find a short history, some maps and primary sources about the Erie Canal.

The Federalist Papers The eighty-five essays supporting the adoption of the United States Constitution of 1787 are found on many internet sites. Of all these, this is the best site. It's well organized and has good graphics.

Gold Rush  A Sacramento Bee site, but still very nice and great pictures.

Alexander Hamilton

The Rise and Fall of Alexander Hamilton A well organized on-line biography of Hamilton.

Hamilton Grange A National Park Service site highlighting Hamilton's New York home.

 

 

 

Jamestown Rediscovery  Visit the archaeological project and visit the first "successful" permanent settlement in British North America.

Monticello  The home of Thomas Jefferson.

The Museum of Slavery in the Atlantic Personal accounts from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, slave songs, statistical information on the slave trade and much more can be found at this site. This is a nicely organized and scholarly site designed by Professor Larson, professor of African history at The Pennsylvania State University.

New Hampshire's Black History This is a wonderful site; well organized and stuffed with information. Learn about African American sailors, slavery in Portsmouth, Prince Whipple - a patriot in the American War for Independence, and much more at this web site.

Religion and the Founding of the American Republic A Library of Congress web site.
